Choosing Between Borehole & Municipal Water

Households, farms, and commercial properties across Kenya increasingly face a choice between relying on municipal water supply and investing in a private borehole. Both have a place, but the right choice depends on reliability, cost over time, water quality needs, and how much control you want over your own supply.


How Municipal Water Supply Works

Municipal water comes from county or utility-run systems, typically drawing from rivers, dams, or treatment plants and distributing through a piped network. It requires no upfront drilling cost and usually comes pre-treated to a basic safety standard. The tradeoff is that supply is shared across many users, which in much of Kenya means intermittent flow, seasonal shortages, and water that can still carry sediment or inconsistent treatment quality by the time it reaches the tap.


How a Borehole Works

A borehole taps into groundwater held in an aquifer beneath your property. Once a hydrogeological survey confirms a viable drilling point and the borehole is drilled, cased, and fitted with a pump, the property has an independent water source that isn't affected by municipal rationing or network failures. Water quality still needs testing, since groundwater composition varies by location, but yield and access are entirely under your control.

  • Reliability: Boreholes are unaffected by municipal rationing; supply depends only on aquifer yield and equipment upkeep.

  • Upfront cost: Municipal connection is cheaper initially; a borehole requires survey, drilling, casing, and pump costs.

  • Long-term cost: Municipal bills are ongoing and tied to consumption; a borehole has maintenance costs but no per-unit water charge.

  • Water quality: Municipal water is nominally treated; borehole water should be tested for minerals, salinity, and bacteria before use.

  • Independence: A borehole gives full control of supply, useful for farms, schools, and commercial sites with high or continuous demand.


Which Should You Choose?

For properties in areas with unreliable municipal supply, high water demand, or plans for irrigation or livestock, a borehole is usually the stronger long-term investment. For smaller households in areas with dependable municipal service, staying connected while treating a borehole as a backup can be the more balanced approach. Many properties in Kenya now use both: municipal water for convenience, and a borehole as a safeguard against shortages.
