Deep Borehole vs Shallow Well: Understanding the Tradeoffs

Not every water point in Kenya needs to reach the same depth. Shallow wells and deep boreholes draw from different types of aquifers, and the right choice depends on geology, intended use, and how much you can budget for reliability.
Shallow Wells
Shallow wells typically draw from the water table close to the surface, often within a few metres to around 20-30 metres deep. They are cheaper and faster to construct, but the water table they draw from is more exposed to seasonal fluctuation, surface contamination, and drought, which can leave a shallow well dry during extended dry seasons.
Deep Boreholes
Deep boreholes are drilled well below the water table into confined aquifers, sometimes reaching 60 metres or more depending on the region's geology. These aquifers are typically more stable year-round and better protected from surface contamination, but reaching them costs more in drilling, casing, and pump capacity.
Comparing the Two Options
Reliability across seasons: Deep boreholes are less affected by drought than shallow wells drawing from the water table.
Water quality: Deep aquifers are generally better protected from surface contamination and runoff.
Cost: Shallow wells cost significantly less to construct but carry higher risk of running dry.
Yield: Deep boreholes often access larger, more stable aquifers capable of sustaining higher yields.
Best fit: Shallow wells can suit low-demand, non-critical use in areas with a stable water table; deep boreholes suit homes, farms, and commercial sites needing year-round reliability.
Making the Right Call
A hydrogeological survey is the only reliable way to know what depth actually makes sense for a specific site, since aquifer depth and reliability vary by location. In most of Kenya's drier or seasonally variable regions, a properly sited deep borehole is worth the added cost for the reliability it provides.
