Choosing Between Hydrogeological Survey vs Water Divining

Before any borehole is drilled, the site needs to be selected. Two very different approaches are used in Kenya to choose where to drill: a scientific hydrogeological survey, and traditional water divining (sometimes called dowsing). The method used has a direct impact on whether a borehole produces reliable water or turns into a costly dry hole.


What a Hydrogeological Survey Involves

A hydrogeological survey uses geophysical methods, most commonly Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) or 2D electrical resistivity tomography, to map subsurface layers and estimate depth to water-bearing formations. A qualified hydrogeologist interprets the resistivity data alongside regional geology to recommend a specific drilling point, expected depth, and a realistic yield estimate. This is the method required for a WRA drilling permit in Kenya.


What Water Divining Involves

Water divining relies on a diviner using rods, pendulums, or similar tools, guided by intuition or claimed sensitivity to underground water. It has no basis in geophysics and does not produce measurable data on depth, aquifer type, or yield. Its results are inconsistent and cannot be verified independently, which is why it is not recognised for permitting purposes.


Comparing the Two Methods

  • Evidence base: Surveys rely on measurable resistivity data; divining relies on unverifiable claims.

  • Permitting: A hydrogeological survey report is typically required for a WRA permit; divining results are not accepted.

  • Success rate: Surveyed boreholes have a materially higher chance of hitting a productive aquifer at the predicted depth.

  • Cost transparency: A survey gives a documented depth and yield estimate upfront, reducing the risk of budget overruns from failed drilling.

  • Accountability: A named hydrogeologist stands behind survey findings; divining offers no professional accountability if the site fails.


Why This Choice Matters

Drilling a borehole is a significant investment, and the site selection step determines whether that investment produces a reliable water source. A proper hydrogeological survey costs a fraction of the drilling budget but substantially reduces the risk of drilling a dry or low-yield hole. For any serious borehole project in Kenya, a licensed hydrogeological survey should come before drilling, not divining.
